With so much happening in the show between Weiss and Yang this last volume I just couldn’t keep my head from coming up with new connections and theories. The following is a collection of the instances in the first three volumes that didn’t exactly make the cut for my first Argument for Freezerburn post. This will cover mainly the things from Volumes 1-3. Honestly, so much has happened in Volume 5 that it needs to be its own part. The first post, Part 1 – Connections and Parallels can be read here.
Disclaimer: As always this is my opinion and interpretation, and just a touch of wishful thinking. I have nothing against Bumblebee or any other ships, I just happen to like Freezerburn… a lot.
1. The opening words to Yang’s trailer match them almost too perfect.
These words were not only great foreshadowing for what would eventually happen to Yang, but are a really fascinating statement that fit Weiss and Yang incredibly well. Both have actual physical marks that make their beauty seem to be somehow smudged or ruined, but the reasons behind how they got those ‘marks’ is a testament to the fact that they are not so simple as most people assume. Both have been physically and emotionally scared, yet both have grown from the one sided and easily processed characters we were introduced to, to arguable two of the most well developed characters on the show. Weiss and Yang are constantly believed to be something by the people who meet them that they are not. Weiss is constantly described as the “Ice Queen” and Yang often as the “Bimbo,” but in reality they are not those things at all. You could probably say this not what they appear theme fits a lot of characters on the show, but it is Weiss and Yang that are actually visibly marked and the ones who are frequently judged out loud on the basis of their beauty and assumed roles. Which I theorize is one of the reason why Weiss has seemed to develop such a keen understanding of Yang in Volume 5. (But more on that later)
2. The doubles portion of the tournament
Weiss threw herself in a lava geyser for Yang, even though she knew that Winter would be watching and judging her fight, just like her sister did in the teams round. She didn’t hesitate, and it is never mentioned or even hinted at that she regrets her choice to save Yang.
I feel like this action in particular is very important to notice. Of all the people of her family, Weiss genuinely cares the most (on an emotional level) about what Winter thinks of her and her abilities. It is clear when we first meet Winter that Weiss wishes to impress her sister with her skills and achievements. She tries her best to earn her sister’s attention and respect every time they are on the same screen.
Yet when the spotlight is on her Weiss chooses to save Yang without a second thought. You can say that she might do the same for Ruby and Blake, and she might have in the same circumstance, or that she saw this as the most logical decision based on her aura level. But I have always seen this action as the start of a pattern between Weiss and Yang on the show.
3. Weiss defends Yang after the singles round of the tournament
In Volume 3 Weiss comes to Yang’s defense again, and just like before it is without a second. The whole stadium and most of Remnant see Yang actually hit Mercury, but even so Weiss is there to defend Yang (the person known for having the biggest temper and often shortest fuse in the group). Weiss is of course is right and Yang wasn’t responsible for what happened, but despite overwhelming evidence Weiss stands up for her. Even more so than Ruby, granted Ruby can be shy and isn’t usually outspoken, but Weiss is fervent in her defense of Yang multiple times in a single conversation.
Weiss is even shocked when Blake doesn’t say anything in support of Yang’s innocence; in retrospect I think a lot of us can now see where Blake was coming from. Even still, knowing how skeptical and mistrusting Blake is, from all the other times Blake was skeptical and mistrusting, Weiss is still surprised that anyone would question Yang’s words or integrity.
She is then gets mad and disappointed in Blake for not believing that Yang is innocent, “How could you say something like that? Yang would never lie to us.” Again, I find it interesting (and possibly ironic) that the person who comes to Yang’s defense with the most energy is the one that thinks “they aren’t that close.”
4. Weiss and Yang have spent a significant amount of time together in every Volume (sans V4 where they were all separated).
Volume 1 – Weiss and Yang spend hours together searching for Blake. After which Weiss changed her disposition and thoughts about how she views Blake. Weiss could have come to this conclusion on her own, but given the Yang and Weiss they spent searching for Blake, Yang would likely be very vocal on the subject. Which means Yang’s views on the faunus and her partner were more than likely influential in getting her to the point that she accepts Blake again.
Volume 2 – They spent another large amount of time together setting up the dance together. While they bantered about smoke machines and doilies. They put together a very successful dance without killing each other, which means they probably didn’t end up fighting that much. The fact that Yang servived planning a party with a Schnee is pretty amazing in and of itself, imo.
Not to mention this is the same volume that Weiss tried out puns. I’m going to say that again in case you missed that, Weiss tried out puns.
Volume 3 – The doubles match. Between the team battle and the doubles match Weiss and Yang must have trained with each other. Don’t believe me? Do you really think Weiss Schnee would go into a tournament battle unprepared and without a plan or practice? Especially considering that Weiss knew her sister would be watching.
Volume 4 – Obviously nothing happened here between them, because they were seperated. Buuuuut, if you wish something had happened then you can read my take on ithere.
*snicker* Sorry, I’m a writer, shameless plugs are sort of a given.
Volume 5 – Not only does it feel significant that they were the first two to meet back up after being separated, but their reuniting moment was quite intense. And almost the entire time that they were together in V5 Weiss seemed intently focused on Yang’s well being, buuuuut more on that next post.
5. Lastly Weiss has seemed to be notably more caring and patient with Yang than any other character (especially in V5).
Considering Yang’s personality you would think she would be the one most likely to drive Weiss crazy and get under her skin, but somehow they don’t bicker and fight as much as you would expect for being ‘complete opposites.’
All of this has seemed to go fairly unnoticed by Yang though. Which is made quiet apparent by how surprised Yang is when Weiss leaps into Yang’s arms to hug her in Volume 5. If my admitted biased theories are correct, and Weiss does have secret feelings for Weiss, then I don’t think Yang knows.
Bonus:
Plus. Just, come one!!!! Is this the perfect image sequence for people realizing they are gay!
It just screams, “Oh my god, we’re gay now.”
