How you can tell Ford was really Stan

“Stan” had six fingers, and “Ford” didn’t have his silver hairline.

Again, no silver hairline.

This highlight is a bit more detailed. “Stan” still has his six fingers, but the real Stan imitating Ford appears frightened and unsure if he should go through with the rest of the plan. If it were really Ford, he would be less frightened and intimidated by Bill since he had faced him before.

Well, that’s all peeps, thanks for your time! :b

Nice catch~

Stan deserves all the more respect for going through with it anyways.

Okidokie folks! Let me lay out all the little tells in this scene, character design-wise!

As noted above, both Stans in this scene have 6 fingers (Stanley is wearing Ford’s 6-fingered gloves), there’s no stripe in Stanley’s hair, and Stanley also looks unusually less confidant than normal.

Here’s the rest:

1. Again, Stanley’s hair is missing the stripe, which was excused by Ford’s hair getting singed earlier. However, the little floofs below their glasses’ arms are drawn differently than they normally are. They’re much more ragged and they’re about the same length, but if you look at the last of the above pictures, Ford’s floof is still a smidge longer than Stan’s.

2. Stan’s Nose. I don’t know if it’s just my imagination, but Ford’s nose has always been just a hair slimmer than Stan’s. In this scene, they actually do switch nose shapes. But Stan’s nose still has it’s distinctive bubbles that Ford’s never had.

3. Going back to the hair, Ford’s hair has always been ridiculously poofy, from his first proper appearance in NWHS, whereas Stan’s is a little more flattened. It’s hard to tell, given that Stan is almost never shown without his fez, but the few times we see him without it, his hair is a very distinctive shape. Here, Stan’s hair is definitely poofy, but not nearly to Ford’s extent. It also mimics the direction that his usual, flattened hair takes.

4. Stubble. Since the first episode, Stan’s stubble has turned his entire chin grey, going almost to the bottom of his eyes with a very distinct cutoff at his ear.  Ford’s stubble, on the other hand, has faded upwards, eventually running out at the bottom of his nose. Here, neither is true. Both twins have fading stubble (unlike Stan’s, which is distinct) that reaches the bottom of their eyes (unlike Ford’s, which ends much lower).

5. Eyebrows. This one I’m not entirely sure on, but whenever I look at the top picture, it feels wrong, so I’m going to say it. Ford’s eyebrows are a shade or two too light, especially when compared to his hair color. Stan’s eyebrows and hair are roughly the same color, while Ford’s hair tends to be darker because his eyebrows match the color of his stripe, not the rest of his hair.

6. Cleft Chin. This was what really caught my eye and tipped me off the second I saw them. Ford has always had a cleft chin, while Stan does not. In Ford’s very first cameo, (when the twins are jumping through time, run by the Mystery Shack in the snow, and Ford sticks his head out), many people noticed that the twin who opened the door had a cleft chin. In the present, Stan does not. This was considered proof of the then unconfirmed “Stan’s Mystery Twin” theory. Also, in Dreamscapers, when Bill is recalling “Stan Pines,” his arm is covering up where a distinct chin cleft would be. I was surprised not to see more people commenting about this one.

So there you go, folks! All the things that might have given the game away if Bill had been the slightest more observant. There are probably more things that I didn’t catch, like “Ford’s” voice crack, but as someone who has spent far, far too many hours trying to draw these dorks on model, these are the bits that I noticed. Have a swell day!
