Okay, Sapphire’s meltdown was painful; she was angry and confused. Though when Ruby wanted to be calm and talk. Ruby knew that she was blaming herself for not knowing, and tries to comfort her. But no she wasn’t having any of it! She didn’t want to get reasoned and she took all that anger out on Ruby! I thought it was Sapphire was the only one who was gonna run off. But no, it was Ruby too, and I think the haunting thing about this letter was that Ruby agreed with what Sapphire was saying; no hint of anger, just acceptance.
SHE LEFT SAPPHIRE AND BELIEVED THAT THIS WAS TRULY THE END! AFTER EVERYTHING!
To me, this means that Ruby felt that she deserved to leave Sapphire; SHE FAILED SAPPHIRE! This shows how she feels so beneath Sapphire; because she is just a Ruby. Sapphire has never ever treated her in that way but I feel like she’s never been able to escape that mindset of what she is a lowly Ruby. It’s been hinted throughout the series she does feel that way. Which is similar to how Pearl could never get out of the mindset with Rose. Not only that I believe that she harbors guilt that she made Sapphire lose her status. What Sapphire said to Ruby that just confirmed her insecure were true.
Let’s review what Sapphire said, “no you couldn’t have known that’s what I’m for…” Now to Ruby, this reads “you’re just a ruby, how could you have known”, unbeknownst to Sapphire she is putting Ruby back in her role as a ruby. To Ruby, Sapphire is saying that she’s just a ruby meaning (she’s stupid like all the rest of them and she’s just meant to be a lowly soldier). This really is insecure which has been hinted through the series. Going back to “Jailbreak” and “the Answer in both instances she said “who cares” and “there’s tons of me”. Which those were small instances that might not mean much but in “Gem Heist”
Ruby goes out of her way to say “Sorry my Sapphire I’m so forgetful and disposable”, all Ruby had to say was that she left the engine on. But she went out of her to point out how incompetent she is and how worthless she is. That Sapphire lowkey picked up on it when she said “what?” Ruby wouldn’t have said that unless she really thought that about herself “that she is just some dumb Ruby”. But the thing is Sapphire made her feel complete and always made her feel special. Which is why it’s even more heartbreaking that she said that to her. That comment was just proving that her insecurities about her were true.
She knows Sapphire just upset and she doesn’t mean what she said but it still hurts her a lot. But as much as it hurts her she knows that Sapphire is having a panicking and needs to calm her down. That’s why Ruby voice is literally shaking when she said “Please we can just stay calm and talk, right… let’s just talk ”, she’s on the brink of tears. But she’s still hopeful that they can resolve this, they love each other they are “here”. But Sapphire putts the final nail in the coffin and separates herself from Ruby “their relationship was a lie”.
That breaks Ruby just because she doesn’t think that. Just because Rose was pink Diamond doesn’t mean that their feelings were a lie (right?). That shatters Ruby’s world everything she’s ever done for Sapphire was a lie. Remeber how I said earlier that Ruby still felt guilt from making Sapphire lose her status as a high-level gem by fusing with her. She failed Sapphire and it was her job to protect her. But Sapphire said that it was okay because they had each other they had Garnet and they fell in love. But now it’s a lie. And Ruby’s just left alone thinking all these horrible thoughts. Meaning she’s starting to believe that she was just fooling herself that she could be with Sapphire, that some dumb Ruby that ruined her life could be with her! And that’s why she just accepted it and left.
Though I think this also gives the implication on why she went to Greg. Think about it. Greg felt insecure about being just a plan guy being with a magical lady like Rose. He never felt like he could never be good enough for her and always a holds that worry with him. I think that’s why Ruby goes to find Greg maybe to just get advice after this whole ordeal.
