I need to talk about Lotor
But before we start, I have to talk about something as important as Lotor. The Galra. Why? Lotor was created in the galran society, so he have strong believes that are from Galra, but that doesn’t means that he is bad.
Okay, I know there’s a lot of discussion about Lotor being good or bad, but I don’t think him could be classified so easily like that.
In S5 we saw a lot of galra culture. They have hierarchy, beliefs and tradition, and Kral Zera it’s specially important in this. There, we could see how a new emperor is chosen and how it’s the ritual to them to ascend. There’s a flame, fire, the planet itself is important because it’s sacred, they don’t live just for the war (however, war have a big influence in their lives). Let’s do an analysis about the “coronation”. They do it by fights, the strongest/winner is then coronated as emperor. I like to compare them to Spartans. Both believe in strength and the society is extremely military, they live to fight and power is being strong. It’s their culture. The emperor is powerful bc they’re strong, so only strong people can be an emperor. Being strong is equal to having a high status, you are only worthy if you are strong, get it?
Now, let’s talk about Lotor, specifically in the White Lion episode.
When he is face to face to the White Lion, he starts fighting with it, differently from Allura, who tries to talk to it. But why Lotor did that? Because he’s bad? No. He was created in a galran society, so he strongly believe that you are only worthy if you are strong. He knew that the White Lion was a test, but to him, the way to pass the test was showing how strong he was, showing that he was worthy because he was strong, because he was created to believe in this. So you can’t say Lotor is bad because he choose violence. You can’t say this scene show how Lotor will act if the paladins don’t help him, bc is not his bloodthirsty talking in this scene, is his culture and his beliefs.
The White Lion is Altean, and the alteans were peaceful and to them, have power = have knowledge, that’s why Allura give her knowledge, bc to her that made sense. But if the Lion was galran, maybe violence was the key
