Yeah, from what I understand, what OP said was correct and that did happen in the novel. However, Collodi was forced by his editors to add that other stuff the other guy described after Pinocchio hangs himself.  He did originally want to end the novel with Pinocchio hanging himself… Granted, I could be wrong about that
