Does anyone know if this is an accurate translation of what Yukine actually said?  

Cause I was reading Vol. 2. in Spanish and they translated it as “¿Por qué no vas y te mueres?” which means “Why don’t you go and die?” which is… a completely different thing

The Japanese is “いっぺん死んでみれば？”　which means “How about you give dying a try?” He’s basically chastising her for telling him what to do when she’s never been in his position. 

The English translation is a lot closer to the original meaning, though it feels a bit less harsh than the Japanese does, to me. The Spanish sounds too much like he’s telling her to just eff off and die. XD

I see why they got confused, then. But it does sound SO harsh in Spanish. I was checking Twitter yesterday and I saw some Spanish people who just got the volume and said that Yukine is the absolute worst. Even though I knew Yukine was even worse in the manga than the anime, I hadn’t read the volume yet. When I did and I saw this panel… omg.

This is actually a really good example of how slightly different translations can completely change how things read to the audience. Ironically, the Spanish is actually more word-for-word accurate (something that audiences always seem to think they want). Thus it’s not wrong, but as we can see, it has failed to communicate the intended meaning behind the words to the audience…probably because the translators were looking at the Japanese at the time, so did not realize that “¿Por qué no vas y te mueres?” doesn’t imply “to see what it’s like” if you don’t already know that’s what he’s saying. Fascinating!
